All About Matisse

Zorah on the Terrace

1912; Oil on canvas, 45 5/8" x 39 3/8" Pushkin Museum, Moscow

Matisse places his model outside, on the rooftop under blazing sunlight, with a minimum of accessories. The intensity of the light is muted by a pale blue shadow. The pinkish-white patch of sunlight is balanced by a matching hue in the goldfish bowl. Thus the cross-referencing of color found in his Fauvist work, such as "The Green Stripe", recurs in post-fauvist work.
