The Artist and his Model
1919; Oil on canvas, 23 5/8" x 28 3/4";
National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa
The design of this picture is complex yet stirdily ordered. The long straight lines
pull one's eye to the bottom left, but then the warm orange on the upper left brings the eye
back up. The color and tone of the picture demanded a creamy texture to the paint, which
works very well in this picture.
